Kidney pain is type of pain that is quite tricky and is felt in the side of
the trunk of the body between the upper abdomen and the back where the kidneys
lie. Pain in kidney is also acute in origin i.e. it goes away with the healing
of a kidney infection.
The type of kidney pain that is associated with the passing of kidney stones is
usually felt on one side of the body where as the pain that is associated with
primary diseases of the kidney usually are felt as scattered pain across the
whole back below the ribs.
Kidney infections usually start in the bladder but there are some conditions
such as diabetes, cancer, kidney stones, and abnormalities of the urinary tract
that can decrease your potential to fight off the bacteria that is responsible
for causing kidney infections.
Common causes of kidney pain are:-
Kidney stones:- It is one of the most common cause of pain in kidney and is
known as nephrolithiasis in medical terms. Kidney stones may be made up of a
variety of chemicals, with the most common one being calcium and their size can
be small as a grain of sand to as large as a grapefruit. The symptoms are:
sharp, "spasm like" pain in the back, side, lower abdomen or groin. It is
recommended that person should take more fluids that will assist the stone to
pass along the urinary tract. In most of the cases the stones passed on their
own and surgery is rarely required.
Kidney infection: - It is known as Pyelonephritis in medicine. This problem
usually occurs in women as compared to men. The symptoms are back pain, severe
stomach pain, flushed or reddened skin, fever, Vomiting, nausea and painful
urination.
Other factors like tumor, injury, spinal arthritis, muscle cramps may cause pain
in kidney.
Treatment:-
Appropriate treatment depends on the cause. The common treatment options include
medications and lifestyle changes. For the proper functioning of the kidneys
make a point of drinking 6 to 8 large glasses of liquid, such as water, juices,
and milk, each day. You should consult your doctor immediately in case if you
have pain when you urinate, cloudy or bloody urine, or pain in your lower back.
These may be signs of another kidney infection.
