Stomach pain is pain that can be felt anywhere between your chest and groin i.e. stomach area; and can range from mild stomach ache to severe acute pain. Stomach pain that is a common problem can occur due to several conditions and to determine the exact cause of abdominal pain can be little difficult. While making the diagnosis it is very important to consider the intensity and duration of pain.



Pain in the abdomen can arise from the various organs that include stomach, intestines, gallbladder, appendix, kidneys, uterus, liver and the pancreas. Due to this reason stomach pain is a concern of general practitioners/family physicians, surgeons, internists, emergency medicine doctors, pediatricians, gastroenterologists, urologists and gynecologists.

Common Causes of Stomach Pain are:-

Pain in stomach can be caused by inflammation in appendicitis, colitis (intestines), diverticulitis.

Abdomen pain can be caused by overeating or dealing with a stressful event.

Stomach pain can be caused by constipation, indigestion, excessive gas, stomach "flu", menstrual cramps.

Pain can occur due to an obstruction of the intestine, swelling of the liver, improper blood circulation, stones in kidney.

Food poisoning, food allergies, ulcers, muscular infection, Diarrhea can cause stomach pain.

Reproductive organs (in women): mittelschmerz (pelvic pain), torsion of the ovary, ectopic pregnancy can cause stomach pain.

Lactose Intolerance, Ovarian Cancer, Ovarian Cysts can contribute to pain in abdomen.

An unhealthy lifestyle, not enough rest and lack of exercise can also contribute to stomach pain.

Severe pain in stomach that refers to an acute abdomen requires an immediate medical intervention to treat its cause. The pain may be accompanied by fever, vomiting blood, nausea, bloody stools, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible as this is an indication of an internal problem.

It is important to note that abdominal pain can be caused by problems outside the abdomen such as heart attacks, diseases in the pelvis and pneumonias.

Appropriate treatment of the stomach pain depends upon its cause. This can range from medications for inflammation, ulcers, to antibiotics for infections and in some cases surgery is necessary.
