Wrist Pain


Any pain or discomfort in the wrist is known as wrist pain. This common problem can arise due to several conditions. The wrists are used in an array of different sports that include badminton, tennis, boxing and are also widely used when we type and in certain occupations.



The wrist contains nine tendons, six bones, two bursa, two nerves and a mass of grisly connective tissue binding it all together. For the appropriate treatment it is very important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms. Common symptoms of wrist pain can include an aching, burning, numbness or tingling in the palm, wrist, thumb or fingers.

Causes of wrist pain are:-

Tendonitis: - It is an inflammation of the tendon sheath that can cause wrist pain and swelling. It is most common cause.

Sprains: - It is an injury to the ligaments around the joint and may cause wrist pain.

Carpal tunnel syndrome: - It results from dysfunction of one of the nerves in the wrist. During this you may experience aching, burning, numbness, or tingling in your palm, wrists, thumb, or fingers. It can occur due to any reason such as by typing on a computer keyboard or if you are overweight or having diabetes or playing handball.

Fracture: - Any fracture in the wrist bone may cause wrist pain.

Arthritis: - This is also a common cause of wrist pain. There are several causes of arthritis. Particularly Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis are responsible for wrist pain.

Bursitis: - It is an inflammation of a bursa that allows tendons and muscles to move easily while moving. Bursitis may cause pain in wrist.

Treatment:-

The treatment of wrist pain depends on the cause of the problem. Treatment generally entails altering activities, rest and physical therapy will improve your wrist strength and flexibility. Ice packs and medication will also help to reduce inflammation and pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications are most commonly prescribed medications for wrist pain caused by arthritis and tendonitis.
